Google Plus will be shut down in August 2019, due to a recent security breach. How exactly does this affect your business and the internet in general?
Let’s break it down.
If you are not a current Infinite Laundry client, you may be unaware of what exactly Google Plus was. Essentially, Google Plus was Google’s very own social network, allowing users to create separate circles of friends and users, share messages within those circles, post and share content, comment on content, video chat, organize images and more. However, Google Plus did not win the competition against other big-name social networks like Facebook. In fact, 90% of sessions on Google Plus lasted less than 5 seconds! Despite this, businesses benefited from maintaining a professional appearance on Google Plus due to the app’s strong search algorithm ranking factor, which would boost the site rankings for businesses that would post regularly on the app.
This security breach has been an ongoing problem for the past seven months, although no one has noticed any misuse of user data. Essentially what happened is information that should have been private was open for outside developers to see. It’s been reported that it’s unlikely that the developers were even aware of the breach.
Although there has been no announcement of any negative impacts of the security breach, we are continuing to monitor our clients’ accounts for suspicious activity. We are also following the story so we remain aware of any useful information regarding our clients’ online protection.
Luckily, Google isn’t leaving its users hanging. They have recently launched their new Google My Business local listing platform, a new place for local businesses to post and share content, helping them to continue ranking well on the search engine.
So, we are transitioning the posting and management we have been doing for our clients on Google Plus to Google My Business.
If you are a current client of ours, there is no need for you to take any action. We have it all taken care of for you, but of course you may contact us if you have any questions.
